Black Sabbath is the self-titled debut studio album by English rock icons Black Sabbath, released on Friday, February 13, 1970 via Vertigo Records in the UK and on June 1, 1970 via Warner Bros. Records in the US. It is universally recognized as the foundational record that birthed heavy metal music.
Recorded in a single frantic 12-hour session on a modest budget, the album features the band's legendary original lineup: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums). Moving away from the era's traditional blues-rock formulas, the record introduced a sinister, down-tuned sonic landscape. Heavy reliance on the tritone musical interval (the "diabolus in musica"), doom-laden imagery, and occult horror themes set an entirely new template for dark rock music.
