Heaven and Hell is the ninth studio album by English heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath, originally released on April 25, 1980. It is celebrated as the band's landmark first record featuring legendary vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who replaced Ozzy Osbourne and revitalized the band's commercial and critical success.
Produced by Martin Birch, the album represents a monumental stylistic shift from the sludge-driven doom of Sabbath's '70s era to a faster, more melodic, and deeply theatrical heavy metal sound. Driven by Tony Iommi’s razor-sharp riffs, Geezer Butler’s aggressive basslines, and Dio’s soaring, fantasy-infused lyricism, the record achieved platinum status and single-handedly redefined early '80s metal.
