Vol. 4 is the fourth studio album by English heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath, released on September 25, 1972, through Vertigo Records.
Recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, California, the album represents a major artistic turning point for the band. While retaining their signature heavy riffs, Black Sabbath famously embraced experimentation, incorporating piano, string orchestrations, and acoustic textures. The sessions were infamously fueled by a massive budget for illicit substances, a lifestyle directly referenced in the acoustic-led ballad "Changes" and the blistering heavy metal anthem "Snowblind."
