CD
Originally commissioned by classical pianist Jeremy Denk, this dense and expansive piece was written during the same creative window as Mehldau's acclaimed Three Pieces After Bach. It features long extended pedal-points, sharp contrasts between triadic consonance and extreme dissonance, and a freely subdivided 7/4 meter.
Similar in intimate scope to his 2020 project Suite: April 2020, this collection trades large-scale development for concise, atmospheric miniatures. Mehldau describes the pieces as capturing those internal, solitary moments during waking hours when one retreats from the outer world into an exclusive space of consciousness—ranging from enraptured and placid to nervous or melancholy.
