I Love People features musical arrangements that are described as both opulent and immediate, with a "deep-pile Hollywood production sound". The album showcases songs with a dryly humorous and at times dark worldview, centered on the characters and people described within them. Hanson uses a blend of classic folk and rock tropes, presenting them with a sense of "expert misdirection".
