Mandi: Friulian farewell; attributed variously as a diminution of “m'arcomandi” (“I recommend”), or the Latin “manus dei” (“hand of God”), or the Italian mani di deo (roughly, “may you stay in the hands of God”).

Mandi is the debut album from UK-based Canadian saxophonist David Zucchi, which explores a collection of reel-to-reels recorded by his father’s family in 1959 on a Geloso G. 255 recording device. Elaborations on and reconstructions of the words, songs, and music of these tapes, along with the glitches inherent in the recording process and the deterioration of the reels form the basis of the musical material.

Mandi is a simultaneous embrace of past and present, communicating a snapshot into his family’s experience as Italian immigrants in Canada and David’s own musical world. In the way that his own family communicates their lives and experiences through their words and music, David conveys something of himself through a range of musical references from jazz, ambient, electronic, experimental, and classical, developing his own interpretations of the meanings behind his family’s messages.

London-based Canadian saxophonist David Zucchi enjoys a varied career as a performer of classical, contemporary, experimental, and improvised music, collaborating regularly across the UK, Europe, and Canada. David appears on recordings from NMC, Another Timbre, Delphian Records, Signum Records, Sawyer Editions, and Birmingham Record Company. When not working with a wide range of composers, bands, and ensembles, David is active as an improviser and producer of music in his own right. Mandi is his debut album of original music.
