For more than 15 years, Della Mae has been a trailblazing force in the roots music scene. With a GRAMMY nomination and countless miles on the road, the female-forward string band now delivers a career-defining album with Magic Accident. Produced by longtime women-in-roots advocate Alison Brown, the record marks Della Mae’s debut on Nashville’s Compass Records.
Magic Accident highlights the band’s remarkable range—from Americana that recalls early Chicks to fiery bluegrass and dreamy indie-folk hues. Their signature blend of vocal power and instrumental skill shines across this mostly original set. Standouts include “Out Run ’Em,” written by guitarist Avril Smith and featuring champion fiddler and founder Kimber Ludiker; “Lifeline,” sung by bassist Vickie Vaughn; and the title track, penned and performed by Celia Woodsmith. Guests include Mary Bragg (vocals) and Jen Gunderman (accordion), with Brown adding banjo and guitar.
Formed in Boston in 2010, Della Mae has proven that an all-women band is no novelty. Their 2013 release This World Oft Can Be earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Bluegrass Album and an Emerging Artist of the Year nod from the International Bluegrass Music Association. They’ve performed in more than 30 countries on behalf of the U.S. State Department and remain favorites on the roots circuit, where their high-energy shows continue to inspire audiences with the power of their music and message.
