Illmatic is the monumental debut studio album by American rapper Nas, released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records. It is widely considered by music critics and fans to be the greatest hip-hop album ever recorded.
Recorded when Nas was only 20 years old, the album presents an ultra-realistic, poetic portrait of inner-city life. The lyrics focus on his experiences growing up in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, New York. Nas combined complex internal rhyme schemes and sophisticated storytelling to explore themes of poverty, survival, hope, and social neglect.
