Aenima is the second studio album by American progressive metal band Tool, released on compact disc on September 17, 1996, and on vinyl on October 1, 1996, through Zoo Entertainment.
The album represents a massive evolutionary leap for the band, marking their transition from raw alternative metal into sprawling, complex progressive rock. It is the first Tool record to feature bassist Justin Chancellor, whose intertwining, effects-heavy basslines with guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey formed the band's signature sonic architecture. Produced by the band alongside David Bottrill, the record is famous for its dark atmospheres, polyrhythmic time signatures, and lengthy, shifting arrangements. Thematically, the album heavily explores themes of psychological evolution, spiritual rebirth, and the psychoanalytical theories of Carl Jung.
