Released in 2011, Distressor is the definitive debut EP from the Bay Area outfit Whirr (originally known as Whirl), and it remains a foundational pillar of the modern shoegaze revival.

 

Across its tracks, the record masterfully balances massive, wall-of-sound distortion with a hauntingly melodic core. It leans heavily into the "loud-soft" dynamic, where soaring, ethereal vocals are frequently submerged beneath waves of heavy, swirling guitars and crashing cymbals.
