Widely considered Common's commercial and critical breakthrough, this album serves as a foundational pillar of the Soulquarians movement—a legendary neo-soul and alternative hip-hop collective. Recorded at the historic Electric Lady Studios, the project features immersive, organic, and jazz-inflected production masterminded heavily by J Dilla, alongside Questlove, James Poyser, and DJ Premier. Named after the Mexican novel and film, the record blends sharp social commentary, spiritual themes, and vulnerable storytelling. It includes the Grammy-nominated hit single "The Light" and legendary guest contributions from D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, CeeLo Green, and Femi Kuti.
