The Pixies' Demos Purple Tapes is a reissue of the band's legendary 17-track 1987 demo cassette, also known simply as "The Purple Tape". This set of recordings attracted the attention of the 4AD label and laid the groundwork for their first official releases. The tapes originated from a three-day session in March 1987 at Boston's Fort Apache Studios. Producer Gary Smith, who funded the session with $1,000 borrowed from frontman Black Francis's father, later recalled that the band did not even view the tracks as demos at the time, but rather as a record.
