Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express is the fourth studio album by the Australian indie rock band The Go-Betweens, released on March 17, 1986, through Beggars Banquet Records. Mostly recorded in London, it is widely considered the album where the band truly found their definitive sound, transitioning from their earlier, sharp post-punk experimentation into sophisticated, literate jangle-pop. The record showcases the masterful songwriting contrast between Robert Forster’s theatrical, angular poetry and Grant McLennan’s bittersweet, lush melodic style. It was highly praised by critics upon release and gave the band their first real commercial foothold in Europe.
