Opus Eponymous introduced the world to Ghost's theatrical concept, featuring the first incarnation of frontman Tobias Forge as Papa Emeritus I backed by his Nameless Ghouls. Musically, it eschews modern extreme metal trends for a vintage sound heavily inspired by 1970s occult rock, heavy metal, and pop sensibilities—drawing comparisons to Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Mercyful Fate. The record contrasts dark, Satanic lyrics with surprisingly catchy, upbeat melodic hooks and church organ textures.
