Vinyl Reissue
The Verve Essential Vinyl Series reissue of Body & Soul celebrates the brilliant late-career genius of jazz icon Billie Holiday. Originally recorded and released in 1957, this historic album captures "Lady Day" just two years before her tragic passing in 1959. While her vocal texture had grown more fragile over a lifetime of personal struggles, these performances lost none of their emotional weight—instead gaining an intimate, raw storytelling quality that profoundly influenced generations of vocalists.
On this record, Holiday is backed by an elite, tight-knit small jazz ensemble featuring tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, and guitarist Barney Kessel. This stellar lineup acts as both sensitive accompanists and masterful soloists, perfectly mirroring the deep blues and vulnerability of Holiday's delivery. Part of Verve's accessible reissue campaign, this edition pairs high-quality sound with replicated original artwork to provide a foundational piece for any jazz vinyl collection.
