Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch! is a towering masterwork of avant-garde jazz, reissued as part of the Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series.
Originally recorded on February 25, 1964, at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and released later that year, Out to Lunch! stands as Eric Dolphy’s only session as a leader for Blue Note Records and his definitive musical statement. Dolphy, an artist of startling originality, achieved the rare feat of embracing the revolutionary, boundary-pushing spirit of free jazz while keeping a foot firmly planted in the swing and rhythmic foundation of post-bop. Throughout the session, Dolphy demonstrates complete multi-instrumental mastery, shifting between the sharp bite of his alto saxophone, the deep, vocal textures of his bass clarinet, and the fluid acrobatics of his flute.
To realize his avant-garde visions, Dolphy assembled a formidable quintet of modern jazz visionaries:
- Freddie Hubbard on trumpet
- Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone (replacing a traditional piano to create an open, spatial sound)
- Richard Davis providing fluid, elastic lines on bass
- A young, exploratory Tony Williams on drums
The album features the iconic cover art and photography designed by Reid Miles. This entry in the Blue Note Essentials series is curated specifically as an accessible introduction to the genre’s cornerstones.
