Colored Sands is the fifth studio album by Canadian technical death metal pioneers Gorguts, released on August 6, 2013, through Season of Mist.

Colored Sands marked a monumental return for the band, arriving as their first studio album in 12 years following a long hiatus and the passing of original drummer Steve MacDonald. Mastermind Luc Lemay assembled a brand-new, elite lineup for the record, recruiting lead guitarist Kevin Hufnagel, drummer John Longstreth, and avant-garde bassist/producer Colin Marston.

Departing from the hyper-dissonant, chaotic structures of their legendary 1998 album Obscura, Colored Sands presents a highly sophisticated, cinematic, and progressive approach to technical death metal. It is a deeply immersive concept album centered on the history, culture, and tragic fate of Tibet. The lyrics and compositions track a narrative arc exploring the peaceful nature of Tibetan philosophy, the stunning geography of the region, the violent 1950 Chinese invasion, and the ultimate erosion of compassionate values. Critically lauded upon arrival, the album effortlessly pairs crushing, atmospheric death metal arrangements with a fully realized, non-metal classical string quintet piece.

Track list:

  1. "Le Toit du Monde" (6:33)
  2. "An Ocean of Wisdom" (7:20)
  3. "Forgotten Arrows" (5:42)
  4. "Colored Sands" (7:55)
  5. "The Battle of Chamdo" (4:42)
  6. "Enemies of Compassion" (7:03)
  7. "Ember's Voice" (6:48)
