Counterbalance is a highly regarded album in Finnish jazz history, originally released in 1971. It showcases the pioneering work of composer and pianist Heikki Sarmanto, who had studied at Berklee College in Boston and was part of the "Serious Music Ensemble" that questioned the musical norms of the time. The album is noted for its warm and harmonious fusion of jazz, rock, and elements of Finnish folk music, utilizing both electric (including Fender Rhodes keyboard) and acoustic instrumentation.
