Parader is a departure from Henson's previous work, seeing the elusive songwriter shed his former "quiet boy" persona to embrace a more intense, grunge-infused sound reminiscent of his youth. The album serves as an introspective exploration of time, memory, emotional darkness, melancholy, and seething frustration.

Henson recorded most of the instruments himself in his home studio. The album is described as having a raw, immediate quality, featuring distorted guitars, crashing drums, and visceral production.
