The instrumental album Mike & Beignet Go to the Zoo is a spiritually resonant, multi-dimensional percussion and vibraphone journey from renowned avant-garde musician Mike Dillon. Set for release on October 2, 2026, via Royal Potato Family Records, the 11-track LP completes a loose trilogy of solo instrumental releases following Functioning Broke (2016) and Rosewood (2020). The Creative Concept & Backdrop Dillon began composing the album in December 2020 amid deep grief over the loss of several close friends and musical icons, including New Orleans jazz patriarch Ellis Marsalis. To find light in the dark, Dillon conceptualized a whimsical, comforting pivot: he metaphorically transformed his late friends into animals and imagined taking a joyful trip to the zoo with his beloved dog, Beignet.
Beignet was a 5.6-pound Papillon who entered Dillon’s life in 2018 via his wife, artist Peregrine Honig. The tiny pup became Dillon's constant road companion, logging thousands of miles in the touring van. The project became an absolute tribute to friendship when Beignet peacefully passed away in late 2025 just after the final album mixes were finished. The album's striking cover art was lovingly illustrated by Honig herself.
