Originally released in 1996, ATLiens is the seminal second studio album from the Atlanta duo Big Boi and André 3000. Widely heralded by critics as one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time, the album marked a massive creative turning point as the duo took over the production reins alongside Organized Noize.
Moving away from the earthly, Southern-player vibes of their debut, ATLiens introduced an atmospheric, space-inspired aesthetic that masterfully integrated elements of dub, psychedelic rock, and gospel. Lyrically, the record trades party anthems for existential contemplation, urban storytelling, and themes of alienation—using the concept of "aliens" to mirror their own sense of isolation within the hip-hop community.
