Surfing on Sine Waves is the sole album released by Richard D. James (better known as Aphex Twin) under his alias Polygon Window. Originally released on January 11, 1993, on Warp Records, it is the second album in the label's influential Artificial Intelligence series. The album reached #2 on the UK Dance Albums Chart.
The record is a cornerstone of early IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) and is praised for its hypnotic, textured, and atmospheric sound. The tracks explore the sonic possibilities of analog synthesizers and drum machines, juxtaposing harsh acid techno lines with softer ambient textures. The album's cover art, featuring a photograph of Chapel Porth beach in Cornwall, where James spent time as a child, hints at the themes of coastal landscapes and cryptic emotions found within the music.
The album was reissued in 2001, adding two bonus tracks, and again in 2025 as the Expanded Edition, which combines the original album with the companion Quoth EP and other related tracks.
