If R.L. Burnside was whiskey he’d be sour mash. If Jon Spencer was whiskey he’d be 12 year bourbon. Together they created ‘A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey’, a raw romp of stompin’dirty blues at its finest.
The Blues Explosion provided a perfect foil for Burnside to find his groove in the grit in the opener, Goin’ Down South, heavy in the red distortion of Snake Drive and sadly the tenth song, Have You Ever Been Lonely?
Together the two faced criticism of breaking the rules of what a blues album should be and blah blah but whatever Burnside has never sounded happier and freer playing with Spencer, and Jon for his part is having a blast playing second fiddle.
I never get bored of this album from 1996 on Fat Possum Records. It made the label cool. Too bad Burnside and Spencer never made a follow because ‘A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey’ is too damn short.
