Originally released in 1985 and reissued on vinyl by independent label Drag City, this self-titled EP is a landmark release of the mid-'80s American underground. Squirrel Bait's sound combined a heavy, metal-inspired guitar crunch with furious hardcore punk tempos, acting as a crucial sonic bridge that anticipated the 1990s grunge movement. The band featured notable musicians who would later form highly influential indie and post-rock groups like Slint, Gastr del Sol, and Bastro.
The EP's production matches the raw, reverb-heavy vocal distortion and driving rhythm sections pioneered by contemporaries like Hüsker Dü and Black Flag.
