The Valley is a deeply personal concept album based on the childhood traumas of Whitechapel's vocalist Phil Bozeman, with the title referencing Hardin Valley in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bozeman grew up. The lyrics explicitly confront his mother's struggles with mental illness, her multiple personalities, and an abusive stepfather, incorporating real, unsettling excerpts from her personal journals. Musically, The Valley marks a cinematic evolution for the band, blending their signature brutal deathcore style with atmospheric melodies and clean vocals.
