Originally released on April 29, 2016, through Rhymesayers Entertainment, The Impossible Kid is the seventh studio album by underground hip-hop icon Aesop Rock. Marked as one of his most approachable yet deeply personal works, the album features complete creative control and self-production.
The foundations of the album were born out of isolation when Aesop left San Francisco to live and record in a barn in the woods. Musically, it boasts a dense, alt-rock-infused sonic landscape filled with synth abstractions, piano crawls, and hard-hitting garage-rock samples. Lyrically, Aesop pairs his legendary rapid-fire dexterity with an unprecedented willingness to open up. He touches honestly on aging, depression, fractured family dynamics, and the comfort of his cat, Kirby, balancing heavy thematic elements with a newfound sense of wit and levity.
