"Disappointment-Hateruma" is the historic 1975 collaborative recording between Japanese percussionist Toshiyuki Tsuchitori and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Released in 1976, it holds the distinction of being the first album ever released under Sakamoto's name, predating his debut solo LP Thousand Knives and the formation of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Sakamoto utilizes prepared piano (inserting objects between strings to alter the sound), an EMS Synthi A synthesizer, and Fender Rhodes. Tsuchitori provides a complex rhythmic foundation using marimba, gongs, various percussion, and wordless vocal chants. The sessions took place at the Columbia Studio in Tokyo. It captures a moment when Sakamoto was deeply immersed in the world of free jazz and contemporary classical music, collaborating with a percussionist who was a veteran of the international free-improvisation scene (including work with Derek Bailey and Peter Brötzmann).
After being out of print for decades, the album has been remastered for a February 27, 2026, reissue by Wewantsounds, bringing this "lost" piece of Japanese musical history to a wider audience.
